Gun Control

I have no words for what happened in the Senate yesterday. I am still in utter disbelief. Every single proposal shot down. How can these people look at the parents whose children were killed in the Sandy Hook shooting? Twenty-six people died that day in one of the worst mass shootings in our nation’s history and nothing has been done. It’s things like these that make me lose faith in our government. “Criminals do not submit to background checks now,” said Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. “They will not submit to expanded background checks.” Why not at least try it then? I just don’t understand. These people are so afraid of losing their funding from groups like the NRA that they won’t do anything. None of these measures were even that progressive! The most progressive part of this legislation was a ban on assault weapons. It wasn’t even all assault weapons; it was just those carrying large magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammunition. I can’t believe nothing is going to be done after a tragedy like this.

This gun control legislation would have been very important for Obama’s presidency, and he has failed. Senators say they may reconsider if they feel the public’s opinion has changed. “But with the families of Sandy Hook students in the Senate gallery and a flurry of gun rights phone calls flooding Senate offices, it was hard to imagine how much more emotion could be brought to bear. Aides to senators supporting the bill said that only outside circumstances, like another mass shooting, might cause those who voted “no” to reconsider their positions” (Weisman, Johnathan). It’s absolutely mind-boggling to me that these senators need to see another tragedy like the Sandy Hook shooting to change their minds. Seeing twenty children and six adults being brutally murdered isn’t enough for you? I know it seems like I’m a little over passionate, but I just don’t understand the logic behind this positioning. The only reason these proposals are not being passed is because gun-rights advocates are afraid to set a precedent. One law will lead to another. No matter which way you look at it, I don’t understand how the Senate can just sit back and do nothing. Even if you don’t want to set a precedent, as leaders of the country you’re just going to sit back and do nothing as more and more people die from gun violence each day? After the Sandy Hook shooting, even if you pass weak legislation, at least it looks like you had some type of response to it. They passed no legislation, which shows that they have done absolutely nothing to at least attempt to stop something from Sandy Hook happening again. I just can’t believe it. Please leave your comments because I can talk about this topic for hours.
